Happy iNSD week from Design House Digital! Yeah, we’re getting a little excited and
decided to kick off a week-long celebration – one day just simply isn’t enough. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you had fun at Wendy’s blog.
Let’s see a show of hands – who has done heritage layouts
before? Sometimes when you’re working
with heritage photos, you have poor images passed down from one generation to
the next. Photos might be laden with
scratches, creases, even faded colors.
There are a lot of corrections you could make in Lightroom or Photoshop,
but why not use an overlay to enhance the aged look? Would you really want a picture from the
1930’s or 1940’s to look like it was printed today, full of saturated color,
glossy?
Here’s a good example of a photo from my own stash. The boy in the front, sitting down, is my Dad
and this picture is c. 1948. I’ve never
seen the original. This is a scanned
copy sent to me by my Uncle. See that
scratch in the lower left-hand corner, and the crease? These add character to the photo, putting it
in the time period of … well … “old”. LOL
Overlays are a great way to add to more aged features to a
photo. Here’s that photo again, but with
the addition of an overlay from Agnes Biro. Agi’s kit has some overlays with creases, and my photo had a
crease, so why not enhance what was already there and make that original crease
look deliberate? The overlay has also
covered up that scratch in the lower corner.
So, there’s your tip for today: Heritage photos don’t have
to be perfect – work with what you’ve got and enhance those imperfections. With iNSD games underway, that leads me to
your challenge for the DHD challenge: Use an overlay on at least one
photo on your page. Remember, in order
to be entered into the drawing for a digital photo frame, you need to complete
a layout that has ALL 26 challenges (one at each blog hop stop) and post your layout
in the DHD gallery by Tuesday, May 8 at 11:59 MST.
Have you been collecting your letters to get this collab kit
from the DHD Designers? They’ve outdone
themselves AGAIN with an awesome kit that’s jam-packed with goodies. Okay, grab a pen … my letter for you is … N.
To get your next letter, head on over to Persnickety Prints
… BUT, before you leave, how about the chance to win a $10 gift certificate at
DHD? To get your name entered into the
drawing, post a comment here answering this question: If I could go back in
time, I’d go to _____________________. ETA: I should answer my own question, shouldn't I?! LOL If I could go back in time, I'd go to February / March 1996 and tell my Dad that the discomfort he is feeling is not "just" an upset stomach and he should see his doctor. Maybe then, we might have caught the Big C in time. *sigh*
Want MORE? How about the chance for a $25 gift certificate? I'll be hosting a one-hour speed scraplift at 2:00 pm EST / noon MST on Saturday, May 5. Join me in the DHD chat room on the weekend for more details.

Okay, if you get stuck on the blog hop, don’t forget that you can go back to the DHD blog (where we’re starting from) and start again.
Have fun! Can't wait to see your layouts in the gallery.

If I could go back in time, I'd go to ... hmm, for some reason Victorian England is the first time that popped into my mind! Not sure why, but I'll go with that :)
1776. I'd like to meet The founding fathers.
worry less. ;)
I'd go back to high school. There are a lot of things I want to do differently!
I'm a family historian. If I could go back in time I'd go to April 1, 1911 and find out what happened to my great-great-grandparents' fourth child. The UK census for that year revealed that there were 4 children born but only 3 were living. (This is one of my brick walls.) Right after the census was taken my great-grandmother and her dad left Nottingham to sail to Canada.
If I could go back in time, I'd go back to 1997 and make sure I fought to pay for college.
If I could go back in time, I would live in the 50's. Looks so fun!
I would go back to the day that my grandfather passed away and talk to him a little longer on the phone.
If I could go back in time, I’d go to ancient Rome.
I go back to the Seattle World's Fair of 1962! Ok, I was there...but I was just a baby. :P I'd love to have seen all the exhibits. Love catching a glimpse with the flashbacks people have shared so far.
Thanks for the tip, I love overlays but never thought to make a vintage photo more vintage.
If I could go back in time, I would go back to the 70's...and relive growing up with my brother and sister and cherish every single moment of it!
Thanks so much for the chance - I think I would go back to the 50's my favorite era!
Hi There...
Am I The First To Comment?...If I Could Go Back In Time...Well...I Don't Want To Be A Downer But...My Mom Passed Away A Few Years Ago & She Was My Best Friend & I Miss Her Everyday...If I Could Go Back In Time...I Would Try To Prevent Her Passing,Of Course & If That Wasn't Possible...I Would Have liked The Opportunity To Have,At Least,Been Able To Say Goodbye Properly & Tell Her How Much I Loved Her...One Last Time!
Thanks For The Chance To Win!
Have A Great Weekend!
Smiles,RJ
If I could go back in time...I'd go back to my childhood in Africa, and convince my parents to go on a safari and visit Victoria Falls. :)
Hi Katherine!
If I could go back in time, I’d go to 1985. My grandma was still alive and I would have told her that I love her so very much and give her a big hug. She suddenly passed away and I still miss her very much.
Oh and I love those old photos. Just beautiful.
Have a wonderful day!
Going back in time? hmmmmm.... How about medieval times for just 12 hours and walk about a castle and its gardens. To see a Castle brand new in all its glory.
If I could back in time, I would like to meet the younger versions of my grandparents. I think that would kind of cool!
I'd go to see my parents when they were young.
i would go back in time to the 15 year old me and tell her to USE HER CAMERA!
If I could go back in time, I'd go to the early 80s, and pray that I know then what I know now. HA!
It's hard to say exactly where I would choose to go back in time, but I might pick a very routine day in my childhood with all my family members at home just to be able to truly "remember when."
If I could go back in time, I'd go back to high school and introduce myself to digital scrapbooking! I spent so much money on paper supplies and never had time to finish my layouts...
This is a hard question... I'd probably go to... the 50s, seems like a fun time!
I would go back to the times of "Little House on the Prairie" Love those times!
I'd love to go back to the time when I was 4 or 5, sleeping on my granddads belly. Getting him to give me a chocolate bar with my bread for breakfast.
Life was easy then.
f I could go back in time, I’d go to my college years. Because, well, really do I need to go into detail? :)
I would love to live my entire life over, not that I would necessarily do anything different... except maybe to take more pictures and start scrapping when I was old enough to cut and glue things- LOL!
If I could go back in time I'd go to 1993 when my son was 3 years old. He was the cutest, funniest and sweetest little guy ever. I miss that! He's almost 22 years old now.
If I could go back in time....I'd love to see what my parents were like as kids!
Great question!
If I could go back in time, it would be the 60's. I'd like to have another chance to spend those years with my sisters as my best friends.
I don't know that I could pick one time, I think I would prefer to poke my head in at all the important points in history to watch them unfold.
If I could go back in time, I’d go to when I was in high school, and tell younger me to just relax, things get so much better. But I have a feeling younger me wouldn't listen.
Speed Scrap this Saturday? YAY!!
If I could go back in time, I'd go back to the first couple of days after my son was born and ask my SIL to take a picture of DH with DS.
If i could go back in time, I would hold my daughter in my arms one more time (she was born still)
If I could go back in time, I'd go to my high school days. I'd like to do a couple of things differently. Plus I'd like to make sure I keep up with all those great friends I had (which I didn't do).
I'd go back in time to meet Jesus in person! Thanks so much for the chance to win!
If I could go back in time, I would go back to the year 1997. It was the year I got married, and one of the best of my life.
I would go back to 1969 and prevent the accident that killed my dad while my mom was three months pregnant with me.
I'd go back to college, but maybe without the homework! =)
If I could go back in time I would go back to the mid 60's and show my mom how much I loved her and talk to her about her life--instead of being a bratty teenager. She died when I was 19 before we got to be friends.
I would luv to live in the Victorian era!
that would be when i was 4 years old and we lived in a hut, and i could hear the frogs croaking beneath the floor planks at night. haha! up until now i love it when it rains at night cz i get to listen to my 'lullaby'.
I'd go back to the 1950's and see my parents as young children and my grandma as a young mum.
LindaHAZ said: I'd go back and study ART and choose that as a career.
If I could go back in time I'd go to the summer of 88, and get my mom to stop smoking and go to a doctor...maybe then we would have been able to prevent losing her to cancer in 92.
I would go back to my grandmother's time in Holland! I would love to win!!! Thanks for the chance :o
I'd go back to around the time Jesus began traveling outside Jerusalem. Maybe I'd get to meet him like the woman at the well did. That would have been spectacular!
I'd like to be around when Jesus walked the earth, hoping for the chance to meet him face to face. Thanks for the fun question.
If I could go back in time, I'd go to summer of 2000. I had just graduated high school and was getting ready for college and had the whole world ahead of me...
If I could go back in time, I'd go back to August 1998 and get the ultrasound pictures off my cubical wall before they got lost forever. :(
If I could go back in time, I’d go to a time when my grandparents where all still around, and tell them how much I appreciate and love them, and maybe be able to go and see the ones I hardly knew, because they lived in Holland!
If I could go back in time, I’d go to April 29, 1975 when we left Saigon as the communists invaded the south and I held us back from getting on the last flight out of Saigon which made us take a really long journey to the US (by boat and plane).
Love your 'make old photos look old' tip... I never thought of that. And you're right... to me those old photos just don't look "right" all fixed up and shiny new. Never knew just why, but now I do! It makes much more sense! :)
If I could go back in time, I'd want to go back to my teen years, but only if I went back knowing what I know now!.... There are many things I would change.
If I could go back in time, it would be to October 1990 so I could spend more time with my mother the day before she left this world very unexpectedly. Thanks for the opportunity!
My two daughters are adopted from China. If I could go back in time it would be on the two dates/years my daughters were born. To know why they were left on a street and abandoned on the day of their birth. To know whether they were loved and the real reason they could not be kept. To tell their birthmothers that they will grow to be beautiful little girls who give so much happiness to others. To let their birthmothers know that we look at the Moon when it is full and bright and think of them on the other side of the world.
I'd go back to 1981 and document my pregnancy (beginning, middle, & birth) of my only daughter. If I knew then what I know now, boy I'd have it documented so much better. I want to remember all the little things, but they've escaped me.
I would never go back in time, it would be to painful.
I'd do back to the beginning of my marriage and paid off our debts quicker! Live and Learn :)
If I could go back in time, I’d go to _____________________. Wow, so many fun things and ideas listed here already. Many of THEM sound good to me. :-) I think I'd go back to the end of high school and fight for college, and NOT have gotten married so young. I think the older me would have a good 'talking to' the young me.
Thanks for a chance to win.
I just LOVE the old photo you shared. They are such treasures, aren't they?
(...OR...I'd go back to last Monday and leave the house about 5 min later than I did. Maybe I wouldn't have been rear ended by a kid who wasn't paying attention.) Ouch!
If I could go back in time i'd really love to be a pioneer but i think i will say back to jr. high i wouldn't be so hard on myself and go for all the things i wanted...
I'd go back to Leonardo da Vinci's time and be a fly on the wall while he worked. I would love to see his 'process' as he created his masterpieces.
If I could go back in time I'd go back to my childhood but only if I could retain everything I've learned over the years- so probably not possible.
If I could go back in time, I would go back to my teens and ask my parents about their lives, like when they were young and when they were first married. I had many questions after they died and still now, 20 years later, wish I had asked questions.
If I could go back in time, I would have convinced myself to change my major in college so that I would have learned photoshop from the beginning!
I would not go back in time either, I am looking forward never back!
Phew. When I read your question my brain immediately started to think of all kinds of silly time travel ideas or checking in on ancestors I never knew, but when I read your answer I got tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. I'd go back to Summer of 2000. I'd drag my dad to get a second opinion and insist they start treating him for cancer and I'd warn my grandmother not to check into the hospital for medical observation where some doctor would order her to be taken off her heart medication leading her to have a cardiac incident. Two deaths that could likely have been prevented with timely intervention.
I haven't started on my heritage photos yet but I hope to soon. I have some lovely ones of my father and my grandmother as children.
I have the same story about my dad - same time period (Gall bladder not cancer, but the same symptoms and same end result.) :(
But I'd go back to 1850, Somerset Co Penna and meet my great grand parents and, well, I think it would be fun. Or 1966 and really TALK to my grandfather and ask more questions about him growing up.
I'd go back to the time I was 12 so I could see my grandfather again and ask him all the questions I can't ask now and give him loads of hugs.
Thanks for your part in the blog hop.

Thanks for the tips on old photos it will be a big help. If I could go back, I would go back to our summer trip to Michigan in 1992 and ask my uncle for all the information he knew about my dad's family. My dad had a brain injury when he was a teen and doesn't remember a lot of his family's history.
Wow! What a question. If I could go back in time, I would go back to high school & focus more on serving & accepting others & less on trying to be popular & wanting to be accepted.
THANKS for the chance to win!
If I could go back in time I'd go to 1990...one of the happiest times in my marriage and life... kids were all gone, just us, no house, no phone, footloose and fance free...Good Memories.
